Here are the award categories for the inaugural 2016 Community Radio Awards

All submission lengths given are maximum

Community Development Project of the Year

Social gain and community development is at the heart of what makes community radio unique, and great for the communities they are part of and serve.

This award is designed to showcase those stations that run fantastic projects dealing with community issues. The projects don’t have to be on air, but the station has to be the main organiser.

Examples could include training projects, fundraising campaigns with other organisations, community activities days or projects or stations that run community facilities such as museums and cafes.

Station of the Year

This award is designed to showcase the station that has all the essential ingredients that makes to deliver useful, informative and engaging community radio for its target community.

We want to see a mix of everything the station is doing on and off air, with a balanced audio and written submission, explaining what your target community is and what you do to deliver to that community. Some stations may choose to take highlights and extracts from other awards and work those pieces together to create an overall picture of the station.

Female Presenter of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those great female presenters that are delivering great quality shows and programming for their stations, that really engage with their audience, no matter what the subject, context or type of show.

Male Presenter of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those great male presenters that are delivering great quality shows and programming for their stations, that really engage with their audience, no matter what the subject, context or type of show.

Community Show of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those shows on air to promote community organisations, events and activities, from one of shows to regular features, it can also include those shows that are put together by groups from those separate community organisations to promote their work or activity.

Live Event or Outside Broadcast of the Year

This award is designed to showcase coverage of those special events be them hosted by the station or seeing the station out and about with their coverage. Events could be community, political, sports or just very special or unique, we want to hear how your coverage brought it alive to the listeners and made it unique.

Entertainment Show of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those shows that really engage with their audience to entertain their audience, no matter the time of day or whats going on the entertainment show has to cut through and really capture and engage with their audience.

Speech & Journalism of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those shows or content that delivers informative and engaging journalism and speech programming to their audience. From the news teams that produces regular and in depth bulletins, that cutting interview that holds to accounts or inspires to that breaking news show that was the best or only coverage of what was going on.

Arts & Creative Radio of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those shows or creative content that is either artistic in nature, from drama to soundscape or that use radio as the medium to express , to educate or inform the audience about art and the creative arts.

Specialist Music Show of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those shows and presenters that have a real passion for their music, be it a unique genre of music or a different approach to something more mainstream, or shows dedicated to promoting local, unsigned or live music.

Sports Show of the Year

This award is to showcase those shows that take pride in community sport, from live coverage from sporting matches or events, to coverage of sports that are underrepresented in the mainstream media and niche sports.

Marketing & Station Sound of the Year

This award is designed to showcase how stations engage and promote themselves within their community and how it all comes together with their on air sound. From innovative and engaging marketing campaigns, to jingles and production that really shows who the station is and what its about, we’re looking for a station who is seen and heard.

Volunteer of the Year

This award is designed to showcase that volunteer at your station that really goes above and beyond. It doesn’t have to be about the hours, it’s about the energy and their contribution. In a sector where the majority involved are volunteers, this is for that those that are an example and inspiration to all.

We recommend that station management nominate someone on their behalf.

Young Person of the Year (under 21)

This award is designed to showcase those young people who are passionate about radio, and those who will go on to have a great impact in radio no matter what sector or role they have.

Technical Achievement of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those stations that strive to make it work and make it do what they need it to do because normally community stations don’t have a big budget for equipment or technology, so have to come up with their own solutions for technical development. From websites, apps, servers and “kits” we want stations to promote and share what they did, why and how.

Innovation Award of the Year

This award is designed to showcase those stations that have tried, succeeded and are proud of something that they have done that’s unique and innovative for community radio. From studios of all shapes and sizes in creative places, to innovative funding and income streams, to truly unique shows and programming that maybe doesn’t quite fit into the other categories
